On September 25, 2024, Dr. Anna Molas and PhD candidate Ana Cerezuela presented the first results of the study on pregnancy and climate emergency at the Barcelona Exposome Symposium, coordinated by the AFIN Group at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The research project, called Living Pregnancy in Barcelona: Women and Pregnant Persons Facing the Climate Emergency, has been competitively funded by the Barcelona City Council and is being developed in collaboration with Sant Pau Hospital, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, and Hospital del Mar. The project’s goal is to understand the experiences of pregnant or breastfeeding people in the city of Barcelona in relation to the effects of climate change and pollution, as well as their perceptions of their health, reproductive decisions, and future outlooks.

The emerging results presented shed light on how pregnant and breastfeeding people in Barcelona perceive and construct the idea of “environment.” The presentation was received with great interest by the symposium attendees due to its social approach in a predominantly quantitative and biomedical research setting.
